“However, in later works, Poloni’s group demonstrated that the blocking of the adsorbing sites at the metal nodes by the phenyl ring in cis isomer was responsible for the decreasing adsorption capacity of CO2 in PCN-123 [85]. Apart from that, the application for modulated adsorption of other gaseous molecules such as alkanes and carbon monoxide was also attributed to the same mechanism. Moreover, such understandings of mechanism can be used to design the externally tailorable CO2 capture functionality of photoswitchable MOFs. For instance, metal substitution or ligand functionalization can be utilized to improve the adsorption performance. Consequently, by substituting the Zn4O node with stronger adsorbing of Mg4O, the adsorption capacity of PCN-123 was optimized by two times.”
