BaO-based DFMs for ICCU-methanation

BaO was investigated as the adsorbent of dual functional materials for integrated CO2 capture and utilisation for methane production (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.apcatb.2020.119654). The authors stated that BaO was selected because it is widely used in lean NOx trap. Ru/Al2O3 provided the catalytic sites. The combination of BaO and Ru, including intimate mixture and mechanical mixture, was investigated. However, this work reported a very low production rate of methane, with about 0.009 mmol/g, although the selectivity to CH4 was over 98%. It is noted that obtaining high CH4 selectivity has normally been reported in ICCU-methanation processes. The authors ascribed the low CH4 production to the use of low temperature (~350 °C), low partial H2 pressure and low Ru loading. In addition, the mechanical mixture of DFMs exhibited lower efficiency compared to the intimate mixture. It is noted that this is the only paper available using BaO-based DFMs for ICCU at the time of writing this article.
